Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturing company, was founded in 1865 by Fredrik Idestam. In 1871 Idestam moved the company to Nokia, Finland, thus it received the name Nokia Ltd. In 1967 Nokia Ltd, Finnish Rubber Works and Finnish Cable Works Ltd were joined together to form an organization called Nokia Corporation. Now the head office of Nokia is in Espoo, Finland. Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo became the president, CEO and chairman of the board on June 1, 2006.
Nokia Corporation, now as a multinational company, has its presence all over the world. Nokia’s regional head offices are in New York and Texas, and their international offices are in the Asia Pacific and Singapore. Some of the major production factories are located at Salo, Finland; Chennai, India; Beijing, China; Dongguan, China; Komarom, Hungary; and Ruhr region, Germany.
Some of the major series of mobile phones by Nokia include the following: the Classic series (Mobira series), Original series, the 1xxx-9xxx series, and the special function phone series. Some of the models included in the Classic series include Senator, Talkman 450 and Cityman 100. Nokia’s Mobira Talkman, which was launched in 1984, was the world’s first transportable phone.
Some of the models in the above series are Nokia 1600, 2160i, 3300, 5185i, 6600, 7110, 8910i, and 9500. Special function phones such as Nokia E-series, N-series, N-Gage, VERTU and Cardphones include models such as E50, N70, N-Gage QD, Signature, Diamond, and D311.
According to reports, Nokia 1100 is the world’s best selling handset with over 200 million handsets sold worldwide. Nokia now produces mobile phones for all market segments and protocols such as GSM, CDMA, and W-CDMA. Nokia has been listed as the 5th most valuable global brand by Business Week in the year 2007. ‘Fortune’ in 2007 rated Nokia as the world’s 20th most admirable company and 119th largest company.
