The Chicago-based hard rock band Disturbed have evolved as a group since their debut 2000 album The Sickness. However, the band have stayed true to their original musical aesthetic, and they are primarily known for their aggressive, brooding sound and brutal guitar work. Disturbed originally came out of the nu-metal explosion of the late-90s, when bands like Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach were ruling the charts an innovative mixture of live rock instrumentation and staccato, turn-table breakbeats. Today, Disturbed have toned down the turntable work, and the band currently specialize in an appealing blend of tortured alternative metal paired with singer David Draiman's powerful but melodic vocals. One thing that sets disturbed apart from many other contemporary metal bands is that, while Draiman is known for the unearthly screams captured on many of the band's tracks, their lyrics are typically intelligible, and often socially relevant. Since their formation, Disturbed have also been the go-to band for slasher and action movie soundtracks. Their debut single, the anti-conformist anthem "Down With the Sickness", has been featured in the films Dawn of the Dead, The One, xXx and Queen of the Damned, as well as in a US Marines commercial. The track was also parodied by Weird "Al" Yankovic in his "Angry White Boy" polka medley. As Disturbed gained recognition, their tense live show quickly made them fan favorites on the rock festival circuit, and the band has frequently toured with Ozzfest. Disturbed has opened for goth king Marilyn Manson, as well as putting together their own series of "Music Is A Weapon" tours to showcase the talents of fellow heavy acts like Taproot, Chevelle and Drowning Pool. 2005's Disturbed album, Ten Thousand Fists, showcased the band's relentless musicianship while taking them away from nu-metal's trademark scratching. As their fans mature, so too have Disturbed, and their rambunctious early stompers seem to be gracefully transitioning into a more mature (but still aggressive) sound. And in keeping with this more mature trend, they have delved into impressive covers of Phil Collins and Tears For Fears, which have become hits in of themselves.
